To help you get straight to the content you’re interested in, the following is a list of the most popular sections on the site:

  1. Bookmaker Reviews – If you want to place a bet on the internet, you’ll need to find yourself an online betting site. We also have a separate guide to mobile betting sites if you’re looking to place bets on your phone.
  2. Betting Promotions – Everyone loves a good freebie, and the bookies love dishing them out too. In our free bets section we’ll give you the rundown on how they work, and more importantly – where to get them. Many decent bookies also run regular offers, promotions and money back specials either on an ongoing basis or around big events and games. Keeping track of them can be a bit of a pain though, which is why we also maintain a list of active offers over on our sister site so you don’t have to.

Choosing a Betting Site

I know that trying to figure out which betting site is the right one isn’t necessarily all that easy. It seems as if there are a never-ending amount of them out there and if you asked ten different bettors which online bookmaker they use you’ll likely receive ten different answers. The most important thing to remember is that there isn’t necessarily one right answer, apart from the say that if you don’t go with one of the ones recommended on these pages then there’s no guarantee that the one you choose will be licensed by the Gambling Commission.

The important thing to think about at this point is what you personally want from your online bookie. There are a host of different things that you can look out for, with the following being the main topics worth thinking about:

  • The Best Odds
  • Relationship With High Street Shops
  • Expansive Coverage
  • Regular Promotions
  • Loyalty Schemes
  • Usability Of Website
  • Decent Features

That list isn’t exhaustive, but it gives you an idea of the sort of things you’ll want to think about before taking the plunge and signing up with a specific site. If you like to bet on particularly random or unique sports, for example, then the depth of the coverage offered by a bookie will really important. Similarly, if you tend to mix up your betting between doing so online and going into physical shops then you’ll want to sign up with one that offers the ability to do both and to link your accounts.

As I say, there is no one right answer. You might chat to someone who talks about the fact that one bookmaker is significantly better with the odds that they offer than another, but if you tend to bet small amounts on a regular basis then you might be more concerned about loyalty schemes than getting an extra pound or two per bet. Likewise if you mostly use apps on your phone then you won’t care about the usability of the company’s website.

Have a think about the things that matter most to you and then read what I’ve got to say about the various bookmakers and see which one chimes most clearly with what you’re after.

Sign Up Offers

If what I’ve said about what you should look for in a bookmaker doesn’t really bother you, or you find yourself in a position where several bookies tick all of your boxes, then the next best thing to look at is what their sign up offer is. Pretty much every bookmaker worth their salt will have one, so letting that be the decided factor for you isn’t the worst decision that you could make.

Bookies regularly try to out do each other when it comes to the sign up offers that they put forward to new customers, so don’t be surprised if they either look very similar or else get better the more that you look. That being said, they aren’t a one-size-fits-all package and the different companies will make offers that fit in with their specialisations.

You will know what you’re likely to do with your online betting account, so don’t be afraid to rule bookmakers out if they’re not offering you something you want. Some will go big on bonus funds for the casino that’s attached to their sportsbook, for example, but if you don’t know your mahjong from your pai gow then it’s simply not worth worrying about.

Instead keep your eye out for offers such as free bets on sports that you tend to bet on regularly and take advantage of them when you can. Look out for things such as stake limits and how many times you’ve got to roll your bet over before you’ll be able to withdraw any winnings. Made sure you think about what you want to get out of a bookmaker and you’ll almost certainly be able to find one with a welcome offer that suits you.

Betting on Football

If you’ve visited this site then there’s a very real chance that you’re looking to place some bets on football matches. On the face of it, that may seem a simple enough. After all, anyone who likes sport will have watched a match with friends and said something along the lines of ‘the reds are winning this 2-0’ or ‘I fancy this to be a bit feisty, reckon there’ll be a load of yellow cards’.

If that sounds familiar then you’ve already indulged in the sort of thought process that is part of the world of betting on football matches. Read the various articles on the site and you’ll soon discover that I generally recommend avoiding betting according to your gut instinct and instead suggest that the more research you’re willing to do the more likely it is that you’ll be able to make sensible decisions with your bets.

That’s not to say that your gut is never right, of course. I’ve watched matches before when the home team has been absolutely battering the opposition but my gut told me that the away team was going to score next, so I’ve duly placed the bet and won because of it. Football is, as any fan of the sport will tell you, fickle in nature and so it’s hardly surprising that games don’t work out exactly as people think that they should or how logic dictates.

Generally speaking, though, the more you’re willing to invest in terms of time to do research the better placed you’ll be. Following the social media accounts of players might help you learn that a star player is going to miss an upcoming match through illness or injury, for example, or that they’ve had a baby and will be sleep deprived. Knowing that certain sides have bogey teams that they never beat no matter the form they’re in when the play them is another thing you can bear in mind. There’s never a guarantee of winning, but you just want to be as well placed as you can be.

Bet Types

Being able to bet on football is great, but there are a couple of things you can do to make things even better for yourself. One of them is do the research that I’ll keep banging the drum over, whilst another is to have a look at the various types of bet that you can place to see if there are any that you didn’t know about that tickle your fancy.

There are loads of different bet types out there for you to explore, with some of them being more mainstream than others. As I mentioned earlier, if you’ve ever discussed which team you think will win, which player will get on the scoresheet or what you think the final score will be then you’ve already got your brain engaged with the idea of Match betting, First, Last and Anytime Goalscorer markets and Correct Score wagers.

Explore a little further and you can find the likes of Asian Handicap betting, whether you reckon Both Teams To Score in a match is a good bet or what the Winning Margin will be when the full-time whistle goes. That’s to say nothing of the various specialised bets offered by different bookmakers that are designed to encourage you to bet with them rather than their rivals. One of the most popular bets is an Accumulator, in which you try to predict the result of a series of matches and can win big if you get every prediction correct.

Football Betting Rules

Knowing the types of bets available to you in the football betting market is great, but you can still be caught out every now and then if you don’t know the rules that bookmakers employ on certain bets. Say you’ve played a bet on Crystal Palace to beat Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1 in the FA Cup but the match goes to extra-time, do you know what happens to your wager?

Most bookmakers look at Correct Score bets as being valid within the 90 minutes plus stoppage time of the match proper, making them invalid if a match goes to extra-time. That means that your bet would become a losing one and you’ll see no money returned for it. What if, however, the match had been postponed for some reason? Do you get your money back then? Or is the bet simply made void and your stake returned to you?

They’re the sort of questions I look to answer in the Rules section of the site, in order to ensure that you aren’t given a shock when a bet you thought you’d placed either doesn’t pay out what you thought it should or else ends up being a loser when you thought it was a winner. Obviously it’s not an exhaustive section and you should always make reference to your bookmaker of choice in order to see how they deal with specific outcomes, but I’ll give you a good overview of the sort of things you’ll need to take into account.

Features

More and more bookmakers are looking for unique and interesting ways to win over customers, with interesting features being one of those ways. A lot of the bookies tend to offer virtually the same features as each other, with the likes of In-Play betting and Cash Out options now commonplace. When they first came out they were specific to the bookmakers that created them, however, so they will have won them a fair bit of business.

Bookies continue to try to find such interesting features where possible in the hope of getting one over on a rival, so different features continue to pop up every now and then. Request-A-Bet style features are one of the interesting ones, in which you can usually Tweet or email a company to ask them to give you odds on a specific series of events taking place within a match.

Obviously how influential a different bookmaker’s set of features are will depend entirely on your own personal preference. If you only tend to place straight bets that you can get from any old company then you don’t need to worry yourself too much. If, however, you’re constantly looking for ways to make your betting experience more innovative and exciting then you’ll want to keep an eye for a bookie that tends to be at the forefront of creating new features on a regular basis.

Articles

Most of this site is about take a bird’s eye view of the betting industry, keeping a broader focus and looking at things in general terms. In the Articles section, however, I do pretty much the opposite of that and zoom in closer to have a more focussed look at various different parts of the betting market. I do in-depth research so that you don’t have to, looking at the available stats and numbers to create a picture of specific betting markets that you can then bear in mind when you come to place your wagers.

Even if you don’t think that you’ll ever actually use any of the information that I reveal in the various articles I’ve written, it’s still worth checking them out. It gives you an idea of the sort of thing I’m talking about when I say that doing your research will help you when it comes to placing your bets. Does one of the major European leagues tend to see more drawn games than the others, for example? If so, is it worth thinking about that before you come up with your accumulator selections for the weekend? That’s the sort of question I look at in depth.
